Cody W. Dowden

Attorney

My name is Cody Dowden and I am proud to work as a Bentonville criminal defense lawyer. I was born and raised in Texas, where I remained throughout college, attending Sam Houston State University to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Political Science.

While at Sam Houston, I was named to both the National Criminal Justice and National Political Science Honor Societies. I then moved to Arkansas to attend law school at the University of Arkansas - Little Rock Bowen School of Law in 2004.

There I participated in the traveling Moot Court team, attending national competitions in California and New Jersey, and eventually becoming Chairman of the Moot Court Board. During one competition, I won the accolades of Best Petitioner’s Brief and Best Oralist.

Extensive Prosecutorial Experience

After I successfully obtained my Juris Doctorate, I worked for a short time as an attorney for the Department of Finance and Administration before accepting a position in Hot Springs as a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney. During that time I handled district court misdemeanors, juvenile court, and select felony and misdemeanor appeals in circuit court. For four-and-a-half years, I prosecuted cases, trying everything from speeding tickets to Class Y felonies and everything in between.

During my tenure as a prosecutor, I was a member of the DWI court, traveling to Missouri and Louisiana for DWI Court seminars and training. I was also trained as a forensic interviewer through the Child Advocacy Center for forensic interviews in sexual assault investigations.

I left Hot Springs for Northwest Arkansas in 2012 where I began practicing criminal defense. I use the tricks of the trade learned from being a prosecutor to zealously fight for my clients, be that through plea negotiations, bench trials, or jury trials.

I have represented clients all over Northwest Arkansas, and as far away as Pocahontas and Benton. In my capacity as a criminal defense attorney in Bentonville, I have handled thousands of cases and have tried hundreds. To learn as much as possible for use in defending clients, I have attended many seminars to hone my skills, including the DWI Means Defend With Integrity seminar in Las Vegas and many other seminars all over Arkansas.

I have even run seminars for other lawyers and judges on the effects of Arkansas domestic violence convictions on federal firearms rights, DWI defense strategies, and participated in the teaching of DWI field sobriety tests to fellow lawyers. Additionally, I am proud to have guest lectured at the University of Arkansas School of Law in Fayetteville.

Finally, I have attended the same training law enforcement goes through for the administration of field sobriety tests as taught by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
